9 Free Things You Can Do On the Weekends

Spread the Money

For those of you on a budget or just trying to save more money, I know its difficult keeping your spending to a minimum, especially during the weekends.   The costs of entertaining ourselves and our families have gotten way out of control.  Just going to the movie theater these days will cost you at least $20 bucks a person after you purchased a ticket and ordered one thing from the concession stand.

So I’ve come up with a list of 9 things that you can do for free on the weekends.   I’ve practiced all of them and they have saved me a bundle over the years. Try them out and see if they can also work for you.

Hey, you have nothing to lose.

Go to the Library

I love the public library. I’ve written a previous article about how wonderful libraries are and more people should use them.  It’s just not on many people’s radar.

You can get so many free resources at the library. From books, magazines to DVD’s.  And it’s also a great place to get away from everyone if you just want some peace and quiet time to yourself.

But if the nearest library is very far from where you live, it may not be worth going to if you factor in the cost of gas, taxis or public transit to get there and back.

Read a Book

Sit outside and read a good book, especially if it’s nice outside.  Re read one of your favorite novels or go to the library and take a book out and discover something new. It’s a great, free and easy way to enjoy yourself.

When you get lost in a good book, you can temporarily escape reality and forget your problems. It’s a good way to give your mind and sanity a break.  Even if it’s for a couple of hours.

Go for a Walk or Run

Everyone always feels better after doing some exercise. Why not go for a jog or a brisk walk at your local park?  Or just go for a walk around your neighborhood (if it’s safe).  Better yet, go with a friend or your kids and catch up with each other while you both get some moderate exercise in. Make it a weekly routine thing.

Hang Out at Your Friend’s House

Go over a friend’s house and chew each other’s ears off (not literally). Play with their dogs (if they have any) or just chill out and watch TV together.  Eat all their food and drink all their liquor (just kidding).

If you can walk there from your place, even better. You’ll save money on gas or public transportation.

Sleep In / Take Naps

I love sleeping in on the weekends. Especially during the winter months or when it’s crappy outside.  I tell people this is my hibernation period. There is all this new research that claims getting enough sleep is vital to your health. So if you are like me and you don’t sleep much during the work week, why not catch up on your sleep on the weekends?  You’ll feel more refreshed and energized and the best part is that it’s free.

I realize if you have young kids in your house, sleeping in may not be so easy for you.  Maybe you can get your partner or have a relative entertain them temporarily while you catch up on your beauty sleep.

Make Love

If you’re in a loving committed relationship, then making love is a great free activity you can do on the weekends.   Rekindle the passion and romance with your partner and get great exercise and stress relief while you’re at it.

Many studies have claimed that regular love making can be great for the mind and the body.  It’s also a sure fire way for maintaining a healthy and happy relationship with your partner.  As the saying goes, ‘the best things in life are free’.

Watch TV at Home

I have to admit that I am a TV junkie.  I love watching old re runs of Roseanne and many shows on the Food and Cooking channels.  And a lot of other shows that are too many to list here. Some people think watching TV is a huge waste of time and you can do more productive things with your time instead.

I disagree with the TV watching haters because TV actually calms me down.  I get a lot of entertainment value from it and I actually save money by watching TV instead of going out and spending more money on other forms of entertainment.  I get into a very relaxed state of mind when I’m watching TV, especially infomercials (Don’t judge me).

But I know watching TV is not really free since most people (like me) are paying an arm and a leg for their monthly cable package.

If you like to write and express your feelings on paper, why not start writing a journal?  Or if you haven’t written in a long time, pick up from where you left off. Start writing that screenplay you’ve always dreamed of.  Or that novel you keep putting off for years or decades.

Write a letter to your partner, family or friends and tell them how you really feel about them.  You never even have to give it to them (especially if it’s an insulting and hurtful letter).

Writing can actually be very therapeutic.  Years from now when you re read the things you wrote, usually you’ll have a really good laugh about it. You’ll be thankful that you took the time to write what you were feeling and going through in your life in that point of time.  Your writing can even be a great legacy of yours. You don’t have to be a published author to achieve this.  And the best part is that it’s free.

Whenever I re read my journal entries from many years ago, I always get a kick out of it. I’m so grateful that I maintained it because I barely could remember some of the things that went on in my life back in those days.

If you don’t have a physical journal and you don’t want to spend money on one, write in your phone using a note pad app for free instead.

There are always places that need volunteers, Animal shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries, church, seasonal events etc. When you volunteer you are feeding your soul and good karma is bound to come your way.  You may meet some great people while you are volunteering.  It really could be a win win situation for you.

If you have other free weekend ideas that you can add to this list, I’d love to hear them.  Please submit them in the Comments section below.
